About Us

Our Mission

Our Mission

Our Mission

At Branch Four, our mission is to harness the power of data and technology to strengthen local journalism. We promote fact-based, high-quality local news, empowering people to become better informed about their communities and consume less misinformation.

Our Vision

Our Mission

Our Mission

We envision an engaged civic society where everyone has the knowledge to make fully-informed decisions.

Why Local News?

Misinformation is filling the void left by disappearing local news.  As trusted community outlets decline, more people turn to social media and other unreliable sources to stay informed about what’s happening around them. The result is a flood of misleading content - an estimated 86% of Americans report being exposed to or affected by misinformation, while trust in media has fallen to historic lows.

Strengthening local journalism is one of the best ways to resist the spread of misinformation.  Unlike many national outlets, local journalism tends to be nonpartisan and closely connected to the communities it serves. It avoids sensationalism, reduces political polarization, and consistently earns higher levels of public trust. Beyond accuracy, local news fosters a sense of community—keeping residents informed about the issues, events, and decisions that shape their daily lives.

But this essential civic resource is rapidly disappearing.  Since 2005, the United States has lost nearly one-third of its newspapers and two-thirds of its journalists. More than half of U.S. counties now have little to no reliable local news coverage and in many places, “ghost newspapers”—outlets so understaffed they can barely report on their communities—have become the norm.

Our Story

By all conventional measures, there was little reason to start Branch Four.

I had a stable career as a Lead Quant at an investment firm and was raising my one-year-old baby. My days were already full—early mornings with my baby, tough hours at work, evenings spent cooking dinner and catching my breath before doing it all again. But underneath that busy routine, something didn’t sit right.

For years, I saw the growing impact of misinformation - how it was negatively shaping people’s choices about their daily lives, how compassion was being replaced with rhetoric, and how trust was breaking down within communities. I saw its impact everywhere, and yet I kept going about my life, unsure of what role I could play in changing it.

Until I couldn’t ignore the question anymore:  If I have the skills to help, why wouldn’t I try? I had spent my career building systems, leading teams, and solving complex problems. I knew how to turn ambiguity into structure, and I realized those same skills could be applied to a very different challenge. So I didn’t wait for the “right time” - I just started.

Branch Four was founded on April 22, 2025 in the midst of uncertainty - no journalism network, no clear roadmap, and no clear path to sustainable revenue. The journalism industry itself has been declining for decades, with shrinking resources and an unclear future.

In spite of these hurdles, I had unrelenting conviction: the belief that taking a hard path was better than taking no path; that innovation and thoughtful strategy could help strengthen fact-based reporting; and that my efforts could help push back against the tide of misinformation.

So I began by listening. I spoke with anyone willing to share their experience. I read, researched, asked questions, and kept hearing the same thing: strong local journalism is one of the most effective defenses against misinformation. That insight became the foundation and from there, I started building—late at night, on weekends, in the margins of an already full life. Through small experiments, early partnerships, and a lot of persistence, Branch Four slowly began to take shape.

One year later, what started as an idea has become something real. Today, Branch Four supports newsrooms across the country and is powered by a growing community of passionate volunteers. Much of that progress happened in just six months—a clear signal of how urgent our work is. We’re still at the beginning of this journey, but we believe that rebuilding trust starts locally—with accurate information, strong reporting, and communities that feel informed rather than divided.

Branch Four was built on a simple conviction: not to look away, to take the hard path, and to contribute—however we can—to a healthier information ecosystem.  That conviction started this journey and it continues to guide us every day.
